Current Events - Alex Rodriguez tests positive for steroids.
I was watching MLB Network this morning and during the game in which they were showing they broke in with news that Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees had tested positive for steroids during a random drug test in 2003.
While I’m not shocked or disappointed I am not surprised. Steroids have run rampant in the game and now it’s all coming out. It’s disheartening as a fan to know that the players we idolize are cheating. It just amazed me how he sat in front of Katie Couric and lied about taking steroids. Rodriguez won the American League’s Most Vaulable Player Award in 2003. Coincidence maybe ? However, this positive test came before Major League Baseball had punishments for steroid users.
This doesn’t excuse the fact though. I don’t condone the use of performance enhancing drugs in any sport. While A-Rod may not recieve a suspension for taking steriods the embarassment and doubt that will be cast over him will be devistating enough.
I always believed he was smarter than the idiots who have used steroids not to metion any names like Bonds or Conseco, but he seemed to have a better grip on whats right and wrong or so we thought. I always saw Rodriguez as the guy to break Bond’s home run record and restore dignity to it. It would’ve been great to know that Bonds is nothing more than after thought in the annals of history. That record to Bonds is all he has and to see someone like a Rodriguez come along and take it away would’ve been fitting. Atleast Hank Aaron did it naturally and it’s just unfortunate that his record had to be broken by a guy who cheated especially after all Hank Aaron endured as a player during his time.
I got off on a bit of a tagent, but back to A-Rod. I can only imagine the media circus this is going to create for the New York Yankees who are coming off a year where they missed the playoffs (Thank God). Talk about a huge distraction. I’m interested to see what A-Rod has to say about all this. He has declined comment for now, but eventually he will have to answer for his lies. Is there such a thing as an honest athlete any more ?
