Experiences on the Interweb
When I was younger the internet was up and coming and being able to go online was a big deal. I remember how going in chatrooms were dangerous and unsafe. Oh how times have changed.
Chatrooms are the least of our concern these days. While they were all the rage back in the day they have fallen by the way side and now they have to compete with Myspace and Facebook.
Now it is the Facebooks and Myspaces of the world that are concerning parents. I’m at the age where it no longer matters of course, but anywho I’ve experienced both the chatroom and social networking site crazes. I’d have to say the social sites win big time in my book.
These sites are the strong counter point to the chatrooms and instant messaging. I like that social sites have taken it one step further from chatrooms. Where meeting new people involves not just going into a room, but having your own space to chat back and forth leave comments and send messages. They’ve expanded on the whole meet new people aspect.
I like the sites because they allow me to keep in touch with people who are off at college or have moved away. It’s nice knowing that all I have to do is type in their names and comment them and stay in touch just by talking to them through a website. What a novel concept. I can only wonder where it goes from here.
Both Facebook and Myspace are competing for users it leaves me wondering who will come up with the next social site to give those two competition. That also begs the question what else can be done with social sites that these two aren’t already doing.
Out of the two I’d have to say Facebook has gained my attention more since I started college. The reason being I couldn’t wait to sign up for Facebook once I got a college e-mail address. Then they opened the site to everyone, figures. I’m still on MySpace, but I’m a bigger fan of Facebook. I think Myspace is trying too hard to match facebook by adding almost the exact same thing that they feature on Facebook. I think that’ll ultimately be their downfall by trying to match them instead of trying to seperate themselves and be unique.
That is whats it’s all about providing a unique social experience that the other guys can’t. I don’t think either one is doing that personally. They are playing the game of anything you can do I can do better.
